Q: I am wanting to wed simply- at the courthouse, I do NOT want to recite vows or do anything sweet or romantic or flowery. I literally just want to have whatever document/s needed notarized, and I'm out the door. The local county clerk however is saying that we HAVE to recite vows. Is this law? Or can I simply have what I want...someone whom has the authority to state "you are now husband and wife" and let that be it??? In Tennessee. What is this mandated vow? What does it consist of, or how is it usually worded?? I am not making this more difficult- I dont want to go to the courthouse. I want something sweet, something that means something. My fiance however doesn't care about meaning- he wants simple. So, if it must be simple- I WANT IT SIMPLE, no sweetness, no flowery romantic words...cut/dry and dull.
A: You can orchestrate your own vow which can be just brief enough to satisfy the reciting ritual of the marriage ceremony but you are required to swear to the taking of that person to be your husband or wife by saying I Do! ... OK congratulations to you and your spouse.
