Q: I am doing a project for school and I need to know if federal law requires students to take 4 years of PE. I know in New Jersey PE is required for 4 years in order to graduate, but I can't find any federal law that requires schools to mandate that high school students take gym every year.
A: It is NOT a federal mandate. However, most states require that school districts include P/E in their required curriculum. If a school district does not adhere to this guideline they risk losing state funding. Private schools have the freedom to require what they want, but if they receive any government subsidy they may be forced to mandate P/E as well. Hope this answers your question.
