Q: Do you think that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is attempting to start a war with the United States?
A: Hugo Chavez Frias was democratically elected to be leader of the South American country in 1999. His socialism especially appealed to those living in poverty. He is a close friend of Fidel (and Raoul) Castro of Cuba, and is patterning his revolution after Castro's. Already radio stations and newspapers which directly speak out against the government have been closed. He is a close ally and friend to the leader of Bolivia, another country that voted in a socialist government, lead by Juan Evo Morales Ayma. Nicaragua has likewise returned to that form of government with the return of a past tyrant, Manuel Noriega, who lead his party, the Sandinistas to power. Chavez's politics of extreme socialism is in opposition to capitalism and democracy. With money obtained from its oil sales, the country is wealthier than others. It is using this money to fund dissent against the U.S.A. because the few remaining socialist governments left despise and dispute America's own power and leadership in the world's political realm.
